May 7, Datafied communication: The tensions between datafication and organizational communication

Abstract
Modern technologies have significantly enhanced the ability to monitor organizational activities through data. This quantitative shift, known as datafication, is particularly pronounced in media organizations that extensively collect and utilize data about audience activities. While the use of audience analytics in journalistic work has been well documented in prior research, the relational aspects of such data utilization remain underexplored, although the impacts of datafication on work relationships, collaboration, and management are likely to transcend datafied organizations across various industries. In this talk, Rasa Jämsen will discuss her ongoing research on the effects of datafication in organizational communication. Drawing from qualitative interviews and survey data from a major Nordic broadcasting company, this project examines issues such as collaboration, intra-organizational competition, and manager-subordinate relationships.
